Parliament Overrides Tinubu’s Veto on Public Procurement Amendments
In a rare display of legislative independence, Nigeria’s National Assembly voted to override President Tinubu’s veto on the amended Public Procurement Act.
Lawmakers argued the tweaks—focused on digital tendering, vendor transparency, and anti-corruption clauses—are vital for public trust.
The override was backed by a two-thirds majority in both chambers. Supporters claim the law’s reintroduction of electronic procurement processes and strengthened penalties for non-compliance will reduce misuse of public funds by up to 30%.
The Presidency has accepted the override but expressed interest in future collaboration on implementation.
