Flood in mokwa
I lost many things when this situation began. Personally, I went to my school to register my name, and when I returned, it was only 5 to 10 minutes before the rain started. The rain fell throughout the night, and after it stopped, there didn't seem to be any flooding initially. Suddenly, water began flowing from the nearby railway track. It started to accumulate on the road and eventually broke through the sandy area, flooding houses and moving toward the bridge. Many people were at home sleeping, and some remained asleep into the morning.
Assessing the situation is challenging; we cannot determine the number of missing persons until we locate their bodies. I lost a brother, and in one house, 11 people are missing, while in another, 7 people are unaccounted for. Overall, we estimate that around 20 people are missing, but we have only confirmed seeing 4 or 5 of them.
At this moment, it is very difficult for vehicles to pass through the area. The losses are significant, amounting to millions of Naira. We’re trying to understand how the rescue operations are progressing. Are you finding any bodies or survivors? Yes, we have started to find bodies—many have already been buried since yesterday, and some are still in the area.
We also want to express our needs to the government. First and foremost, we seek government intervention. We have lost many lives, and I believe those who have been lost cannot be replaced. The victims are primarily from a local primary school, and those who lost their loved ones are still gathered there. We urgently appeal to the government to do everything possible to help these individuals regain what they have lost, as it will be extremely difficult for them to recover.
