The Edo State Government has enhanced its efforts to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking, earning commendation from stakeholders. The recognition came after intensified campaigns tied to the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse .
At a ceremony held at the Government House in Benin City, Secretary to the State Government Umar Musa Ikhilor announced a renewed preventive strategy led by Governor Monday Okpebholo. Initiatives include rehabilitation programs, school awareness drives, and empowered youth affairs units .
Ikhilor warned that drug abuse poses a grave threat to social stability, public health, and the economy. He also disclosed collaboration with NGOs and security agencies to reduce drug trajectory into vulnerable communities .
The state’s efforts have attracted media attention, placing Edo as a model for other states tackling substance misuse. Further funding and strategic expansion are expected in upcoming budgets.
